About

The Naked and Famous is a modern classic created by bartender Joaquín Simó at Death & Co in New York City in 2011 — a mezcal-based equal-parts cocktail that takes the Last Word formula and gives it a smoky, contemporary twist. Equal parts mezcal, yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, and fresh lime juice, it's a stunning balance of smoky earthiness, herbal sweetness, bitter orange, and citrus tartness. Like the Paper Plane and the Last Word, its genius lies in the symmetry: four ingredients, four quarters, one unforgettable drink. Named after an M.I.A. song (noticing a pattern with Sam Ross's contemporaries), it was added to the IBA's official cocktail list in 2020 and has become the drink most responsible for converting people to mezcal.

Ingredients

0.75 oz Lime Juice
0.75 oz Aperol Apertif
0.75 oz Mezcal

Instructions

  1. Combine mezcal, yellow Chartreuse, Aperol, and fresh lime juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds.
  3. Double-strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  4. No garnish — the drink needs nothing else.
  5. Serve immediately and appreciate the smoky aroma on the first approach.
