About

The Brown Derby is a classic Hollywood cocktail from the 1930s named after the famous hat-shaped restaurant on Wilshire Boulevard where it was a house specialty. Built on bourbon, fresh grapefruit juice, and honey syrup, it's a perfectly balanced sour that lets quality ingredients speak for themselves. The grapefruit's bitter edge cuts through the bourbon's sweetness while the honey rounds everything out with floral warmth. Simple, beautiful, and deeply satisfying — it's one of the great underrated classics of the American cocktail canon.

Ingredients

0.5 oz Honey Syrup

Instructions

  1. Combine bourbon, fresh grapefruit juice, and honey syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Fine-strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with a grapefruit twist, expressing the oils over the surface of the drink before placing it on the rim.
