The Boston Cream Donut Cocktail is a playful, dessert-inspired drink that captures the flavor of one of America's most beloved pastries — the Boston cream donut — through a combination of bourbon, Biscotti Liqueur, creme de cacao, and chocolate bitters. The Boston cream donut itself — a yeasted donut filled with vanilla pastry cream and topped with chocolate glaze — translates into cocktail form with remarkable precision: bourbon and biscotti liqueur provide the vanilla-pastry warmth of the cream filling; creme de cacao provides the chocolate glaze; and chocolate bitters add the bitter cocoa depth that prevents the combination from becoming overly sweet.
The Boston cream donut is derived from the Boston cream pie — a layered cake of vanilla sponge, pastry cream, and chocolate glaze invented at the Parker House hotel in Boston in 1856 (the same hotel that gave us Parker House rolls and the Boston cream pie cocktail). When donut shops adapted the concept into a fried-dough format, they created one of the most iconic American pastries: doughy, cream-filled, chocolate-glazed, and deeply satisfying. The Massachusetts state donut since 2003, the Boston cream donut has become a symbol of New England comfort food culture. Translating it into a cocktail requires mapping its three key flavor components — vanilla pastry cream, fried yeasted dough, and chocolate glaze — onto appropriate spirits and liqueurs. Bourbon provides the warm vanilla-caramel character of the cream filling; biscotti liqueur adds the almond-pastry dimension of the donut dough (not a perfect mapping, but the baked-goods quality is evocative); creme de cacao provides the smooth chocolate glaze; and chocolate bitters add bitter cocoa complexity that keeps the drink from becoming cloying. The recipe was developed by Cocktail Contessa and featured on Cocktail Contessa's dessert cocktail collection. Explore the full Biscotti Liqueur collection. The Boston Cream Donut Cocktail uses creme de cacao — the traditional chocolate-flavored liqueur of the classic cocktail canon — rather than a modern chocolate liqueur. Creme de cacao has a more restrained, cleaner chocolate character than most contemporary chocolate liqueurs, with a slight vanilla note that complements both the bourbon and the biscotti liqueur particularly well. White creme de cacao (the colorless version with identical flavor) produces a lighter-colored cocktail; dark creme de cacao adds a deep brown color that is visually more evocative of actual chocolate glaze.
Stir or shake all ingredients with ice and strain into a rocks glass over ice or a chilled coupe. A rocks presentation is more casual and appropriate for donut-themed enjoyment; the coupe is more refined. Garnish with a mini donut on the rim or a drizzle of chocolate syrup around the inside of the glass before pouring. See MixDrinkEnjoy's cocktail techniques guide. The Biscotti Manhattan and the Old Fashioned are spirit-forward alternatives for the same bourbon occasion.
