About

The Blue Hawaii is the electric-blue tiki drink that defined the mid-century tropical cocktail craze — a dazzling blend of white rum, vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, and sweet-and-sour mix that's as visually arresting as it is delicious. Created in 1957 by bartender Harry Yee at the Hilton Hawaiian Village in Waikiki, reportedly at the request of a spirits rep trying to promote Dutch blue curaçao, the drink became synonymous with Hawaiian beach culture and the golden age of Polynesian pop. Its brilliant cobalt color, tropical fruit flavors, and crowd-pleasing sweetness made it an instant classic, and Elvis Presley's 1961 film of the same name sealed its place in cocktail history forever.

Ingredients

0.5 oz Vodka
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
0.5 oz Blue Curacao
0.5 oz Simple Syrup
1 slice Pineapple
1 oz White Rum
1 piece(s) Maraschino Cherry

Instructions

  1. Combine white rum, vodka, blue curaçao, pineapple juice, lemon juice, and simple syrup in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 12–15 seconds.
  3. Strain into a tall glass filled with ice, or serve in a tiki mug over crushed ice.
  4. Garnish with a pineapple slice and a maraschino cherry.
  5. Serve with a straw.
