About

The Scorpion Bowl is the ultimate tiki communal cocktail — a Trader Vic's classic originally designed to be shared by two to four people out of a large decorative bowl with long straws, making it as much a social ritual as a drink. A tropical punch built on rum and brandy with fresh orange juice, lemon juice, and orgeat syrup, it is fruity, aromatic, and deceptively potent despite its easy-drinking sweetness. The recipe dates to the 1940s tiki era and is widely enjoyed at Polynesian-themed bars where presentation is part of the fun — often garnished with citrus, cherries, mint, and a flaming rum float for dramatic effect.

Ingredients

2 oz Light Rum
1 oz Dark Rum
1.5 oz Lemon Juice
1.5 oz Cognac

Instructions

  1. Combine light rum, dark rum, cognac, orange juice, lemon juice, and orgeat syrup in a blender with 1 cup of crushed ice.
  2. Blend on high until smooth, about 10 seconds.
  3. Pour into a scorpion bowl or large punch bowl with additional crushed ice.
  4. Garnish generously with orange slices, maraschino cherries, and fresh mint sprigs.
  5. Float a small amount of overproof rum on top and ignite briefly for a dramatic flaming presentation, then extinguish before serving with long straws.
