About

The Amaretto Sour is the cocktail that spent decades being dismissed as a saccharine crowd-pleaser before bartender Jeffrey Morgenthaler completely reinvented it in 2012, elevating it to one of the most respected modern classics. His key insight: balance the cloying sweetness of amaretto with a healthy pour of cask-strength bourbon and emulsify the whole thing with egg white for a silky, frothy texture. The result is a drink of startling depth — nutty, almond-sweet amaretto tempered by bourbon warmth, brightened by lemon juice, and given a luxurious body by the egg white foam. It's proof that any cocktail can be rehabilitated with the right approach, and it may be the most surprising drink upgrade in modern bartending history.

Ingredients

0.75 oz Bourbon Whiskey
0.25 oz Simple Syrup
1 slice Orange
1 oz Egg White
1 piece(s) Maraschino Cherry

Instructions

  1. Combine amaretto, bourbon, fresh lemon juice, simple syrup, and egg white in a cocktail shaker without ice.
  2. Dry shake for 15 seconds to emulsify the egg white.
  3. Add ice and shake again vigorously for 15 seconds.
  4. Strain into a rocks glass over ice or into a chilled coupe.
  5. Garnish with an orange slice and a maraschino cherry.
  6. Serve immediately.
