About

The Chrysanthemum is a low-ABV aperitif of remarkable elegance, pairing dry vermouth and Bénédictine with a single dash of absinthe that perfumes the entire drink with anise without overwhelming it. Originally published in Hugo Ensslin's 1916 bar book, it is one of the great pre-Prohibition classics — delicate, herbal, and endlessly sophisticated.

Ingredients

1 dash Absinthe

Instructions

  1. Combine the dry vermouth, Bénédictine, and absinthe in a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir for 20 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist, expressing the oils over the surface.
