About

The Bloody Mary is the reigning queen of brunch cocktails — a savory, spicy, deeply satisfying drink made with vodka, tomato juice, and a supporting cast of condiments and seasonings that can be endlessly customized. Its exact origin is disputed, but most accounts credit Fernand Petiot at Harry's New York Bar in Paris in the 1920s, with a later version refined at the St. Regis Hotel in New York in the 1930s. Bold, complex, and as thick as a meal in a glass, it occupies a unique space in cocktail culture — simultaneously a hangover cure, a brunch staple, and a canvas for bartender creativity. The garnish alone (celery stalk, olives, lemon wedge) is practically a snack.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Vodka
0.5 oz Lemon Juice
1 wedge Lemon
1 piece(s) Olives
1 pinch Black Pepper
1 pinch Celery Salt
1 piece(s) Celery
1 TSP Horseradish
4 dash Hot Sauce

Instructions

  1. Rim a tall glass with celery salt by rubbing a lemon wedge around the rim and dipping it in salt.
  2. Fill the glass with ice.
  3. Combine vodka, tomato juice, horseradish, hot sauce, Worcestershire sauce, and fresh lemon juice in a shaker or directly in the glass.
  4. Season with black pepper.
  5. Stir well or roll between two glasses to combine.
  6. Garnish with a celery stalk, lemon wedge, and olives.
  7. Serve immediately.
