About

The Ward Eight is one of America's oldest surviving cocktails, created in November 1898 at the Locke-Ober Café in Boston to celebrate the election of political boss Martin Lomasney from the city's eighth ward. Built on whiskey with fresh lemon and orange juice plus a generous hit of grenadine, it's an early example of a citrus whiskey sour with a distinctive crimson blush from the grenadine. Though it fell into obscurity for much of the 20th century, the craft cocktail revival has restored it as a fascinating piece of living drinking history — tart, fruity, and genuinely delicious.

Ingredients

0.5 oz Lemon Juice
0.25 oz Grenadine
0.5 oz Orange Juice

Instructions

  1. Combine bourbon, fresh lemon juice, fresh orange juice, and grenadine in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 10-12 seconds until well chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or over a large ice cube in a rocks glass.
  4. Garnish with a Maraschino cherry and an orange twist.
