Created by Vincenzo Errico at Milk & Honey in the early 2000s, the Red Hook is the most celebrated member of the Brooklyn neighborhood cocktail family. Named after the waterfront neighborhood at the southern tip of Brooklyn, it's a Manhattan riff that swaps sweet vermouth for Punt e Mes — the Italian vermouth with a notably bitter, almost medicinal edge — and maraschino for sweetness. The result is drier, more austere, and more complex than a standard Manhattan, with a bitterness that lingers pleasantly on the finish. It became a touchstone of the cocktail revival and inspired an entire genre of Brooklyn-named drinks.
