The Fog Cutter is a legendary tiki cocktail that lives up to its dramatic name — a multi-spirit punch of rum, brandy, and gin softened with fresh citrus, orgeat, and a float of Fino sherry. Created by Trader Vic in the 1940s, it became one of his signature drinks and remains a rite of passage for serious tiki enthusiasts. The sherry float is essential: it delivers a dry, nutty counterpoint that ties the whole drink together and makes it far more sophisticated than its colorful appearance suggests.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Light Rum
0.5 oz Gin
0.5 oz Fino Sherry
0.5 oz Brandy

Instructions

  1. Combine light rum, brandy, gin, lemon juice, orange juice, and orgeat syrup in a cocktail shaker with ice.
  2. Shake vigorously for 12 seconds.
  3. Strain into a tall glass or tiki mug over crushed ice.
  4. Float the Fino sherry over the back of a bar spoon so it rests on top.
  5. Garnish with a mint sprig and citrus wheel.
