About

The Toronto is a sophisticated rye whiskey cocktail that was barely known outside bartender circles until the cocktail revival brought it to deserved prominence. Built on rye with a small hit of Fernet-Branca, a touch of simple syrup, and bitters, it's essentially an Old Fashioned with an intriguing bitter, herbal undercurrent from the Fernet. The name's Canadian provenance is unclear, but the drink itself is unambiguously excellent — complex, warming, and perfectly suited to anyone who finds a Manhattan too sweet and a Sazerac too austere.

Ingredients

0.25 oz Simple Syrup

Instructions

  1. Combine rye whiskey, Fernet-Branca, simple syrup, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir for 25–30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist, expressing the oils over the surface before placing it on the rim.
