About

The Suburban is an early 20th century New York cocktail that predates Prohibition, likely named after the old Suburban Handicap horse race run at Sheepshead Bay. It's a serious stirred drink that combines bourbon's warmth and caramel with dark rum's molasses richness and port wine's fruit and sweetness, balanced by two types of bitters. The combination sounds unusual until you try it, at which point it clicks immediately — the three spirits reinforce each other rather than competing, creating something richer and more dimensional than any one of them alone. Elegant, warming, and deeply satisfying.

Ingredients

0.5 oz Dark Rum
0.5 oz Port Wine

Instructions

  1. Combine bourbon, dark rum, port wine, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir for 30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
  4. Garnish with an orange twist, expressing the oils over the surface before placing it on the rim.
