About

The Rum Flip is a colonial-era classic that predates the cocktail itself — flips were among the earliest mixed drinks in the American colonies, traditionally warmed with a hot poker and consumed by sailors and tavern-goers alike. The modern version is served cold: spiced rum, rich simple syrup, and a whole egg are shaken together vigorously to create a thick, frothy, deeply satisfying drink with the texture of a light eggnog and the warming character of a good rum. It is rich without being cloying, and its warming vanilla-spice finish makes it an ideal autumn or winter cocktail.

Ingredients

2 oz Spiced Rum
1 whole Whole Egg

Instructions

  1. Combine spiced rum, simple syrup, and a whole egg in a cocktail shaker without ice.
  2. Dry shake vigorously for 30 seconds to emulsify the egg fully.
  3. Add ice and shake again hard for another 15 seconds.
  4. Double-strain into a chilled coupe glass.
  5. Garnish with a light grating of fresh nutmeg over the foam.
