The Rob Roy is Scotland's answer to the Manhattan — Scotch whisky stirred with sweet vermouth and a dash of bitters into a silky, warming stirred cocktail. Created at the Waldorf Astoria in 1894 to celebrate the premiere of a Broadway operetta about Scottish folk hero Rob Roy MacGregor, it's been a proud staple of cocktail menus ever since. The smoky, peaty character of Scotch transforms the Manhattan template into something decidedly more rugged and complex.
Instructions
- Combine Scotch whisky, sweet vermouth, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice.
- Stir for 30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.
- Strain into a chilled coupe or cocktail glass.
- Garnish with a Maraschino cherry or lemon twist.
