About

The Monte Carlo is one of the most elegantly minimal three-ingredient stirred cocktails in the repertoire: rye whiskey, Benedictine, and Angostura bitters. It's related to the Vieux Carré and the De La Louisiane but stripped to its barest essentials — the rye's spice and the Benedictine's complex herbal sweetness (27 herbs and botanicals, a 500-year-old recipe) reach a perfect equilibrium that needs nothing else. Named after the Monegasque resort town, it drinks like a Manhattan that abandoned vermouth for something more mysterious. Three ingredients that happen to belong together.

Instructions

  1. Combine rye whiskey, Benedictine, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass filled with ice.
  2. Stir for 30 seconds until well chilled and diluted.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
  4. Garnish with a lemon twist, expressing the oils over the surface before dropping it in.
