About

El Diablo ('The Devil') is a Mexican-born cocktail that pairs blanco tequila with crème de cassis, fresh lime, and ginger beer into a drink that's simultaneously fruity, spicy, and refreshingly citrusy. Created by Trader Vic in the 1940s, it remained obscure for decades before a modern cocktail revival brought it back to deserved prominence. The combination of blackcurrant liqueur and ginger gives the tequila's agave character a surprisingly complementary frame — earthy, sweet, and with just enough bite to live up to its name.

Ingredients

0.5 oz Lime Juice

Instructions

  1. Fill a highball glass or Collins glass with ice.
  2. Add blanco tequila, crème de cassis, and fresh lime juice.
  3. Top with ginger beer and stir gently once to combine.
  4. Garnish with a lime wedge and, optionally, a brandied cherry for a nod to the cassis.
