The Blood and Sand is one of the great oddities of classic cocktail culture — a perfectly equal four-way marriage of Scotch whisky, Cherry Heering, sweet vermouth, and orange juice that somehow resolves into something harmonious, fruity, and deeply satisfying. Named after the 1922 Rudolph Valentino bullfighting film, it's one of the few cocktails where orange juice plays a starring role in a spirit-forward drink without feeling out of place. The cherry liqueur and OJ soften the Scotch beautifully, creating a drink that's far more than the sum of its parts.
Ingredients
0.75 oz Orange Juice
0.75 oz Sweet Vermouth
0.75 oz Scotch Whisky
0.75 oz Cherry Heering
Instructions
- Combine Scotch whisky, Cherry Heering, sweet vermouth, and orange juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice.
- Shake vigorously for 10–12 seconds until well chilled.
- Fine-strain into a chilled coupe.
- Garnish with a brandied or Maraschino cherry.
