About

The Bamboo is a low-ABV masterpiece from the 1880s, attributed to Louis Eppinger, the German-American bartender who ran the Grand Hotel bar in Yokohama, Japan. A stirred blend of equal parts dry sherry and dry vermouth, accented with both orange and Angostura bitters, it is supremely elegant — bone-dry, nutty, and lightly floral with a crisp, clean finish that makes it a perfect aperitivo. The Bamboo was largely forgotten during Prohibition but has been triumphantly revived by the modern low-ABV cocktail movement, and today it is celebrated as one of the finest examples of what a perfectly balanced cocktail can be when neither spirit nor sweetness dominates.

Ingredients

1.5 oz Dry Vermouth

Instructions

  1. Combine amontillado sherry, dry vermouth, orange bitters, and Angostura bitters in a mixing glass.
  2. Add ice and stir for 30 seconds until well chilled and properly diluted.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
  4. Garnish with a lemon twist, expressed over the surface and placed on the rim.
