Almond Old Fashioned

About

The Almond Old Fashioned is a clever modern riff on one of cocktail history's most beloved templates, swapping the traditional sugar cube for orgeat — the almond-flavored syrup best known for its role in tiki drinks. The substitution adds a gentle nuttiness and subtle floral quality that complements bourbon's vanilla and caramel without overwhelming them. The result is an Old Fashioned that's simultaneously familiar and surprising: everything you expect from the original, but with a softening almond sweetness that makes it arguably more sessionable. A brilliant example of how one small swap can transform a classic.

Ingredients

0.25 oz Orgeat Syrup

Instructions

  1. Add orgeat syrup, Angostura bitters, and orange bitters to a rocks glass.
  2. Add bourbon and stir briefly to combine.
  3. Add a large ice cube or several smaller cubes and stir for 20-30 seconds to chill and dilute.
  4. Garnish with a wide orange twist, expressing the citrus oils over the surface of the drink before placing it on the rim or dropping it in.
